Can I Remove Hard Water Stains Myself?
For very light staining — barely visible haze from a few months of sprinkler exposure — some homeowners have success with white vinegar (undiluted) applied with a fine steel wool pad (0000 grade) on wet glass. The acidity in vinegar is sometimes enough to dissolve early-stage mineral deposits, and the steel wool helps mechanically dislodge them without scratching.
This approach has limits. It won’t work on staining that’s more than a few months old, and it requires care — steel wool on dry glass or the wrong grade of steel wool will scratch. For anything beyond very early-stage staining, professional treatment is faster, safer, and produces a better result.
